Sanovi’s cloud continuity software provides single-click self-service recovery management solutions for FlexPods

Hi Chandra, Thank you for taking the time. Please tell us, what is Sanovi all about and what do you do?

Chandra Sekhar Pulamarasetti: Sanovi is a niche business continuity and IT recovery software company providing application-centric solutions for tier-1 and tier-2 workloads across physical, virtual and cloud infrastructure. Sanovi Cloud Continuity for Cisco UCS Director is built on our proprietary and innovative Application Defined Continuity (ADC) technology. We have over 120 customers, including service providers and multi-billion dollar enterprises across multiple vertical industries. Gartner’s 2013 Hype Cycle report on BCP/DR calls out Sanovi’s software as the recovery management solution for heterogeneous platforms.  Sanovi is a Red Herring Global 100 award 2013 winner. Sanovi’s offerings include enterprise DRM and cloud continuity software products.

What pressing problems does Sanovi solve? How are users solving this problem today?

Pulamarasetti: Sanovi’s cloud continuity software provides single-click self-service recovery management solutions for FlexPods. To date there have been none. FlexPod is a reference architecture for server, storage and networking components that is pre-tested and validated to work together as a converged infrastructure stack. The stack consists of products from multiple vendors and is sold by NetApp, Cisco or its value-added resellers (VARs) and systems integrators.

Who is your target audience?

Pulamarasetti: Resellers, OEMs, distributors and enterprises that use FlexPod converged infrastructure.

Why is Sanovi better than current solutions and competitive alternatives? What makes Sanovi unique?

Pulamarasetti: Sanovi cloud continuity, which is underpinned by our ADC technology, is the only solution that works across both physical and virtual infrastructures, enabling true business continuity in private and hybrid cloud deployments. We are the only fully automated business continuity solution for FlexPod cloud deployments utilizing FlexPod storage infrastructure for data protection. And, we are the industry-first to provide this functionality through Cisco UCS Director Cloud management platform. We are paving the way for completely self-service based and self-managing recovery models in clouds using our ADC technology.

Please share your general thoughts on current market trends.

Pulamarasetti: We have seen a lot of competitors focus on virtual environments (for example Zerto), and completely ignore the physical world, but the reality is that enterprises will always have physical infrastructure. In addition, most competitors focus on server-level data protection, and enterprises continue to utilize legacy storage arrays for recovery, which were not initially designed for a dynamic cloud environment.

The converged infrastructure market is expected to grow at a rate of 40percent to 50persent yearover year and it needs a true-cloud recovery solution, which supports dynamic resource configurations, is automated and self-service oriented and can be consumed on a pay-per-use model. Our solution are addressing this growing market.

How do you make money? What’s the business model?

Pulamarasetti: Our go-to-market model is to sell Sanovi software through the channel, including VARs, distributors and systems integrators. We have a straightforward licensing model based on the number of servers, either physical or virtual for our Cloud Continuity software.  For cloud providers, we offer pay-per-use subscription models, as well.

Who are your competitors?

Pulamarasetti: We have not seen any competitors that work across physical and virtual environments with FlexPods. VMware SRM competes with FlexPod virtual-only environments, but Sanovi also has several advantages over them in functionality and environment support. In SRM, there is no self-service capability, no automated DR deployments, no support for physical infrastructure, and no elasticity support.

What business or technology could yours disrupt?

Pulamarasetti: In the cloud, DR needs to be elastic, but existing recovery solutions today are static. Cloud providers will need DR intelligence to manage resources effectively for hundreds of customers. Sanovi ADC will address these issues by working across converged and non-converged infrastructures. By leveraging the data replication capabilities built into converged infrastructure, our customers can support critical applications in scalable private and hybrid clouds based on FlexPods and maintain the same environment on the DR side. The manual DR models will go away and we aim to be the default recovery-as-a-service (RaaS) software platform of choice for the cloud.

Who founded the company, when? What can you tell me about the story of the company’s founding?

Pulamarasetti: Sanovi was founded by three technologists, including myself. Other two founders are Lakshman Narayanaswamy and Raja Vonna.  We had seen business continuity and IT recovery as a gap while working on enterprise architectures in our previous companies and came together.  It is satisfying to see some of the largest enterprise customers use Sanovi software to automatically execute their data-center level recovery exercises and gain confidence. Several of our banking customers have moved their applications to business continuity site in minutes using our software.

What’s next on your product roadmap?

Pulamarasetti: We have a big vision for the ADC technology to provide advanced recovery resource management intelligence in clouds, and will continue to develop recovery lifecycle templates for various other technologies. Our next version will support other popular converged infrastructure platforms.
